Hello, Guest !
We are pleased to announce that the Shikellamy School District provides students and staff with many opportunities to utilize the benefits of technology. The District is connected to the Internet with 4 Mb of bandwidth, burstable to 10 Mb. We are connected from one building to the other with a fiber WAN. All buildings have a wired network. The secondary buildings also have a wireless network. All staff members have access to email and a computer in their classroom. The School District operates on the PC platform. In addition, there is a Macintosh High School Art Lab.
There are currently approximately 1450 computers in the District.
All four elementary buildings house at least one general computer lab, and two of them (Chief Shikellamy and Beck) have an additional mini-lab. Teachers may sign up to use these labs with their classes. In addtion to this, each classroom has four student computers for classroom use. Chief Shikellamy also has SmartBoards in many of the rooms.
The middle schools each have an instructional lab and 48 laptops that are part of mobile labs that operate wirelessly throughout the buildings. Teachers may sign out the mobile carts for classroom use. Each library also has a wireless lab of 16 laptops.
The High School is equipped with a SmartBoard in every department, and in most cases, in every room. There are also 4 mobile laptop carts of 30 laptops each that can be signed out for student use in the classroom. The library has 20 desktop computers for student use. There are 4 main instructional computer labs with 28 computers each, and many mini-labs for student use in the Art, Science, English, Music, and Social Studies departments. We have also been fortunate to obtain the Classrooms For The Future grant, which has provided us with 16 carts supplied with wireless laptops for use in the Social Studies and Science classes.
All secondary students have their own network accounts and space to store files. Elementary students use classroom accounts. The District requires all staff and students to sign an Acceptable Use Policy, which is available under the Information Menu. The BESS filtering system is used to moniter and filter Internet activity.
Students have access to many educational software packages. Study Island is used throughout the District. ClassWorks is available in the elementary schools. Fast Forward is available in Beck and Chief Shikellamy Elementary Schools. The Academy of Reading and Math is used at Chief Shikellamy Elementary School. Read 180 is used at the High School. Accelerated Reader is utilized in the elementary and middle schools. All students have access to the Microsoft Office Suite. There are other programs that are used by individual teachers. United Streaming is available to all students in the District.
We are also pleased to announce the PowerSchool Parent Portal, which is available to parents of students in the secondary buildings. This provides parents with information about attendance and grades.
