Dear Parents/Guardians of Students with Disabilities,

This letter is to advise you of planned changes and the continued provision of a free, appropriate, public education for your child/children, consistent with guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Education, affording public schools “flexibility” in these unique circumstances. You and your child/children continue to have the rights provided to you under federal law. For more information, please view the Notice of Procedural Safeguards on our Website.

The Shikellamy School District will be providing Continuity of Education until the students are able to return to school in accordance with state regulations. Continuity of Education is a broad term that allows districts to provide educational practices to students during a prolonged school closure. Our district is working hard to provide a program that will meet the needs of our students within the guidelines of both federal and state regulations.

Once we return to school, your child’s program will remain the same as it was prior to the closure of school. We are well aware that some services just cannot be provided in a virtual format and we will work with each family individually to provide any assistance as needed. Case managers and related services should be touching base with you as the closures continue. This provision of services will be contingent upon the state guidance as to when it is safe to return to school.

We know that using technology may be challenging for some families and we are available to offer support if any family would need assistance navigating devices or using specific online programs. You can reach out to your IEP case managers for that assistance. If anyone has specific questions about your child’s individual program or loss of services during this time away from school, please contact your case manager or me and we will be available to answer any questions that you may have about your specific child’s program.

Your understanding and cooperation are critical to assist us in moving in a positive trajectory. We are all tasked with jointly working together as a community to ensure our children continue to experience meaningful school programming during this unforeseen, unprecedented time.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Michaels

It is the Shikellamy School District's mission to provide meaningful special education services and instructional programs for all students with disabilities. Shikellamy strives to build special programs specifically tailored to the assessed needs of a student and attempts to deliver those programs in the regular education environment as much as possible. The district is committed to creating programs that are integrally involved with and delivered through general education programs. Shikellamy offers a continuum of services to allow for more independent functioning on the part of the students as they progress through the grades.

Shikellamy's Special Education Department strives to work with parents in creating a positive atmosphere and designing a program that most appropriately meets the individual needs of all identified students. All Shikellamy's special education programs and services are in compliance with state and federal laws governing the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Shikellamy operates many of the programs for its students with special needs. Some of our students will participate in programs operated by the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit.
