Compulsory School Age Requirements
Important Change in the Definition of “Compulsory School Age”
Effective with the 2020–2021 school year, Pennsylvania’s compulsory school age requirements changed. All children from age six (6) through age eighteen (18) are required to comply with compulsory school attendance laws.
Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that their child between the ages of six (6) and eighteen (18) is attending or participating in one of the following educational programs:
- A public elementary, middle, or high school
- A public charter or cyber charter school
- A private licensed academic school or private religious school
- Home education provided by a certified teacher
- An approved home education program
Children may be excused from compulsory attendance requirements for documented medical reasons or other compelling reasons as outlined in the Shikellamy School District attendance policy and procedures.
